Christ (who could be viewed as an animal liberator when in anger he released doves, cattle and sheep from the Temple -- an open-air market) would NOT condone the suffering and sacrifice that billions of animal beings face on a daily basis today.
And his sacrifice (if you happen to believe the Christian story) does not wash away the enormous human sin of devaluing and destroying the lives of countless sentient beings that God (if you believe in him) values just as dearly.
I don't know what (if anything) happens after death, but part of me hopes that something resembling what is commonly thought of as heaven will exist for every senselessly slaughtered animal being. But humans? Nah, we don't deserve it.
